General Inspectorate of Immigration (IGI) issues work permits in digital format
Citizens of countries outside European Union (EU) or European Economic Area (EEA) in order to be able to legally employ in Romania, they need a work permit. They can work for only one employer full-time, and if they want to change their employer, they need a new work permit.
Work permit obtained from the General Inspectorate for Immigration
The General Inspectorate for Immigration resolves the application for the issuance of a work permit within 30 days from the date of its registration. In cases where additional checks are necessary, the deadline may be extended by a maximum of 15 days.
Until recently, work permits were only issued in person at the counter of the General Inspectorate for Immigration (IGI) in the county where the application was submitted, but now, with the new legislative changes, starting with March 2024, the IGI can also issue the work permit in digital format. The format is identical, only it is digitally signed.
The main benefits of issuing the notice in digital format
For the employer:
- It is received online at the email address indicated by the applicant, so there is no need to stand in line at the counter.
- has an electronic signature (this certifies the originality of the document).
- includes a Personal Numeric Code (CNP), thus, the employer no longer has to obtain a Tax Identification Number (NIF) for declaration 112 - Declaration regarding obligations to pay social contributions, income tax and nominal records of insured persons.
For the employee:
- can benefit from specialized medical services, even if they have not obtained a residence permit (until now, hospitals could not correlate the person hospitalized with a CNP, even though the employer paid their health contributions)
Athese changes help streamlining the process of integrating people who arrive on Romanian territory with a work visa and reduces the risks of forgery of these documents.
